History Of Sonny’s BBQ
In Gainesville, Florida, Sonny’s BBQ was founded by Floyd “Sonny” Tillman and his wife Lucille on April 17, 1968. They currently operate over 113 locations across the US, with their corporate headquarters in Maitland, Florida.
In 1977, the company began franchising by introducing a menu that included beef, pork, chicken, ribs, beans, and several sides. Tillman sold Sonny’s BBQ in 1988 after it had expanded to 77 locations in six states.
When Bob Yarmuth bought the business in 1991, it was a small start-up. It was estimated that there were 150 Sonny’s BBQ restaurants operating in nine states by the end of the 2000s.
In 2011, there were 125 franchised restaurants operating under the company’s name. Sonny’s Real Pit-Bar-B-Q changed its name to Sonny’s BBQ in 2013 after moving its headquarters to Winter Park, Florida.
On September 25, 2008, Greater Atlanta Bar-B-Q (the only Sonny’s franchisee in Metro Atlanta) filed for bankruptcy under Chapter 11 protection for 10 locations, including four that were completely closed.
This raised concerns about the viability of another restaurant. However, it emerged from bankruptcy in the first week of June 2009 after fulfilling all of the Chapter 11 conditions. All three of Sonny’s restaurants in Florida, Daytona Beach area closed on October 15, 2008.
Due to conflicts with Sonny’s regarding iconography and icons at the restaurant and on staff’s clothes, the Smokehouse Restaurant in Tifton, Georgia, changed its name to the Smokehouse Restaurant on December 1, 2009.
Tillman owned the original Sonny’s BBQ until 2011 when he renounced his franchise agreement despite selling the franchise. His career took off from there, and he began appearing in ads and attending other functions afterward.
